Neglecting the Feed
Open water marathon swimming is, fundamentally, an eating and drinking contest with a swim attached. A shocking number of athletes underestimate the caloric and hydration demands of a multi-hour effort. The body cannot store enough glycogen to fuel a swim lasting over two hours, yet many swimmers delay their first feed until they feel fatigued—a point at which it is already too late to prevent a bonk. The classic error is treating feeds as a luxury rather than a mandatory pit stop. Swimmers must practice taking on carbohydrates and electrolytes every 20 to 30 minutes, regardless of perceived energy levels. Cold water, in particular, masks fatigue and impairs the sensation of thirst, leading to dehydration that saps strength and clouds decision-making. Failing to rehearse feeding techniques in training—such as drinking from a bottle tossed from a kayak or grabbing a gel while treading water—turns a simple nutritional need into a chaotic, energy-wasting struggle during the event.
The Stroke Rate Trap
In a frantic bid to maintain speed, many marathon swimmers increase their stroke rate while sacrificing stroke length. This is a double loss. A short, choppy stroke with high cadence burns through energy reserves at an alarming rate while producing minimal forward propulsion. The fundamental physics of swimming dictate that distance per stroke is the true currency of marathon efficiency. Swimmers often forget that a long, gliding catch, a high elbow, and a patient finish allow the water to be moved more effectively. The ideal marathon stroke feels smooth and unhurried, with a distinct pause for the glide phase. Rushing the recovery or pulling too early creates turbulence and drag, turning the swimmer into a human paddleboat rather than a sleek vessel. Constant video analysis and stroke counting during training are essential to ingrain the habit of length over frequency.
Sighting Obsession and Errant Navigation
Sighting is a necessary evil in open water, but doing it poorly or excessively is a hidden marathon killer. The typical mistake is lifting the head too high and for too long, which drops the hips, increases frontal drag, and disrupts the breathing rhythm. Worse, many swimmers sight too frequently—every two or three strokes—breaking their flow and adding hundreds of unnecessary mini-sprints to the course. Conversely, the opposite error is not sighting enough, leading to a zigzag path that adds 10 to 20 percent extra distance. The solution lies in bilateral breathing and a relaxed, crocodile-eye lift that uses the natural roll of the body. Elite marathoners develop an internal compass, using clouds, shore features, or support boat markers to take bearings and then swim blind for 10 to 12 strokes before a quick, minimal-lift check. Ignoring the wind and current while sighting is another subtle but critical failure; swimming straight relative to the water does not mean swimming straight toward the finish.
Temperature Tunnel Vision
Cold water is the great equalizer in marathon swimming. The immediate shock triggers gasping, hyperventilation, and a racing heart, yet many swimmers make the mistake of fighting this response with sheer willpower. The true error is ignoring the gradual, creeping hypothermia that sets in after 30 minutes. Swimmers focus on the initial cold shock and forget about the slow drop in core temperature that affects muscle function, coordination, and cognitive processing. Shivering, sluggish arms, and a confused feeling are not signs of fatigue—they are cries for thermal management. Neglecting to wear a properly fitted silicone cap, failing to apply insulating lanolin or grease, or not having a warm, ready feed on the support boat are all amateur oversights. The cold saps energy silently, and by the time a swimmer feels truly cold, the race is often beyond salvage. Acclimatization training and a realistic plan for thermal breaks (where rules allow) are as vital as any pace strategy.
Mental Miscalibration
Perhaps the most pervasive mistake is underestimating the psychological attrition of a marathon swim. The monotony of black water, the absence of lane lines, and the ceaseless repetition of the stroke create a mental vacuum. Swimmers often enter the race with a rigid, linear mindset—expecting a steady, predictable effort. When the inevitable rough patch arrives, they interpret it as failure rather than a normal phase of endurance. The critical error is not having a pre-planned mental toolkit: mantras, visualizations, micro-goals (such as “reach the next buoy” or “swim for 10 more minutes”), and a way to break the distance into digestible chunks. Abandoning technique under mental duress is another symptom; when the mind tires, the stroke collapses, and the swimmer enters a negative spiral. Training the brain through long, lonely sessions and practicing positive self-talk are non-negotiable components of race preparation.
Ultimately, the marathon swim is a test of patience, intelligence, and adaptability. Speed is fleeting, but efficiency endures. By respecting the distance, prioritizing nutrition, lengthening the stroke, navigating with calm precision, honoring the cold, and fortifying the mind, a swimmer transforms a brutal endeavor into a masterful performance. The difference between a finish and a withdrawal often lies not in fitness, but in the avoidance of these deceptively simple, yet profoundly impactful, mistakes.
